What does it mean to spend ethically?

Social Responsibility

Companies that understand being human. These are people who make sure abide by fair labor standards, which means fair wages and safe working conditions. It also means engaging with customers, partners, and media in a respectful manner that furthers social equality. Basically, they're good people doing good things.

Sustianability

In order to be ethical, a company needs to have an understanding of how their business affects the environment, and they need to act on that information. This includes baseline abiding by environmental regulations, but it also means going above and beyond. It's setting goals to be less wasteful, educating the organization in environmental conservation efforts, and making decisions proactively to keep our planet safe.

Pursuit of Perfect Options

That said, we live in a time when there may be no perfect solutions. As many socially responsible systems in place or environmental certifications a company claims, it's unlikely that their supply chain is as clean as they are. Things like where a material is sourced and how it is obtained can disrupt an otherwise perfect company.

This is where the individual comes in. This is where a company, person, legislator standing against unfair, unethical, or environmentally dangerous actions can make a difference.
